Sometimes on Mondays I do a post on the latest health & nutrition news, but today the news is personal and shockingI ran my first 5K race Saturday and survived! I’ve written a little in the past about my exercise habits, but I don’t know if I’ve really explained what a wimp I was when it came to running – I was winded after about a block, literally. Which is exactly why I decided to make myself do it. It’s something I really never thought I could pull off. OK, maybe part of it was that I was approaching 40, and didn’t want to just grow old and overweight.

(Don’t look for me in this pic, these are the fast people out in front…)

I’M EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT THIS…

It was neat running my first 5K in the little town where I grew up. Hello to Deb from Fowler, who I tailed most of the run. It seems I was behind everyone except the walkers. When people took off like a shot and left me in their dust, I was moving along at my humble pace and wanted to yell, “Guys…? Guys! Don’t you want to start off a bit slower?! Maybe pace yourselves a bit?” I became self-conscious thinking, “Wow, I didn’t know I was that slow. Maybe I should’ve had another cup of coffee?” I felt a little better when I passed the elderly woman. I’m embarrassed to tell you my time. 39 minutes even – 12 1/2 minute miles…pathetic! I’m trying to go easy on myself since I only started running in July, this was my very first race, and I ran it without walking at all – a small miracle!

IT ALWAYS HURTS

Kent is training for his first 25K in a couple weeks and said he’s thankful he can often run for an hour or two and nothing will hurt. Not me. I don’t get too winded anymore (unless it’s a really hot day), but my legs still hurt and I want to stop every single time I run. It comes and goes – there will be long streaks where I feel great and my mind is wandering about something else or I’ve got my music loud and I’m loving it, but the pain always returns. I’m constantly amazed at what a mind game it is, though. I have to talk to myself and say things like, “You are not stopping until you go 3 miles, no matter how you hurt”; or each time I want to stop I’ll say, “Shut up and keep running, Kel”, then I’ll find a good AC/DC song and just make myself do it.

TIME TO STEP IT UP

So now I want to step it up somehow and get my legs stronger. I’ll take the advice from my friend, Eric: start doing short sprints in the middle of my 3 mile runs (I’ve heard that’s a good way to burn fat, too), and also getting more consistent with using weights…I’ll let you know if that helps anything by the time I run my next one. (Please comment below if you have any more tips to share.)

WHAT IS IT FOR YOU?

Is there something you’ve always wondered if you could do? Some goal you’ve always thought was out of reach? Miracles happen all the time, believe me. Be different than the typical lazy, unhealthy channel flipper or “too busy” Mom. Pick something you enjoy. Get your motivational self-talk going. Ask God for help. Don’t make excuses. Go do it.

“Russell L. Blaylock, M.D., has been warning consumers for years that statin drugs don’t cure the root cause of heart disease, namely inflammation. Instead, he argues that cholesterol drugs offer so many side effects to users, they should be viewed as dangerous.”

    WE’VE ALL BEEN DUPED

This Newsmax article about the cholesterol drug, Vytorin, is timely, since my last post covered the topic of healthy fats, saturated fats, cholesterol and heart disease, and how we’ve all been duped into thinking saturated fats are the enemy. In reality, the studies that “proved” this did not differentiate between saturated fats and trans fats, and everyone knows by now that trans fats are terrible for your health.

I hope you’ll keep reading, as this week on Wednesday I’ll be posting a follow up – Part 2 on healthy fats – this time covering topics more related to dieting. Scroll down to find out how to subscribe to free e-mail updates, so you don’t miss any new posts. :)

Stories like this one always give me hope. Especially when it comes to something like pancreatic cancer, which usually doesn’t have a great prognosis. Except last year my Uncle Joe was given a pancreatic cancer diagnosis - the doctor was SURE about what he saw. Soon after they found out the docs were wrong. For a while there, he and his family thought his days here were numbered, can you imagine how ecstatic they were to get the good news? Some call it a doctor error…I call it proof that God still works miracles. I’m still thanking Him for that one.

Here’s the Newsmax story: red wine antioxidant kills pancreatic cancer cells

This U.S. News story about how some supermarkets are now using a rating system to help shoppers know which food choices are healthier, sounds good in theory. But the problem is, the foods are rated for how healthy they are according to whom? The article says skim milk gets 3 stars, but whole milk gets zero – what a bunch of nonsense! Skim milk with its oxidized cholesterol from the powdered milk added back in to give it the consistency that is lost when the fat is removed, is deemed healthier than the whole milk with healthy dairy fat the way God made it?! (Read more here about healthy milk choices.)

Don’t be duped by everything these rating systems might lead you to believe, as they’re apparently just following along with some of the ‘politically correct’ rhetoric that has been floating around for too long now.

Read the latest heartbreaking news from the Associated Press that says 1 in 4 teen girls has a sexually transmitted disease. It may seem like just another statistic, unless it’s you or your daughter who may now be infertile, who could have a greater chance of getting cancer, or who could have something like genital warts – imagine having to explain that to your future husband.

    What’s the solution?

Sadly, the FDA’s solution to this problem is to throw another vaccine at it, along with all its dangers and side-effects, instead of addressing the real issue (won’t go there in this post). How the drug companies must love it when the FDA will push their latest vaccine and call it “mandatory”. The newest “required” vaccine is Gardasil, said to prevent certain types of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

Check out the comparison of mandatory vaccines in 1983 vs. 2008.

Now read about the dangers of the Gardasil vaccine, recommended for 11-year-old girls. You can be sure our daughter won’t be getting it.

And another one from CNN: Should parents be worried about the HPV vaccine?
